When to use it

The XER is what Primavera P6 produces to hand a schedule over. It travels between client and contractor, often monthly, and it has to be read before answering.

Primavera P6 is expensive, and rare inside a company. The file, on the other hand, reaches everyone.

What this page does

  • Activities, with their original, remaining and completed durations, and their type.
  • The project's work breakdown structure: each node becomes a summary task, and the hierarchy is rebuilt.
  • Relationships between activities, with their type and lag.
  • P6 calendars, including standard weeks and dated exceptions, read from the string P6 writes into the file.
  • Resources and their assignments.

What it does not do: Activity codes, user-defined fields and resource curves are not used. Klargantt does not write XER files back: the return trip goes through Project XML, a workbook or a CSV.

What is read

  • The Primavera P6 XER, tab-delimited (%T, %F, %R, %E), all current versions.
  • The TASK, TASKPRED, PROJWBS, CALENDAR, RSRC and TASKRSRC tables.
  • The Windows-1252 encoding P6 writes by default.

Are P6 calendars taken into account?
Yes. P6 writes its calendars as a compact string, with a standard week and dated exceptions. That string is read, and the working hours it describes drive the recalculation.
